Vector Competence of a Coastal Population of Aedes aegypti for Dengue 2 and 3 Virus Serotypes in Kenya

چکیده

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue, an arboviral disease caused by dengue virus (DENV) that exists as four distinct serotypes (DENV 1-4). While all DENV circulate in Kenya, differential distribution specific regions suggests transmission may differ among local populations. In this study, we tested hypothesis a coastal Ae. population (Rabai, Kilifi County) varies its ability to transmit DENV-2 (predominant) and DENV-3 (less dominant) related subspecies—domestic (Aaa) sylvtic formosus (Aaf). We orally exposed F1 females (3-10 days old) blood meals containing (10 5.30 pfu/ml) or 5.13 pfu/ml), them individually for infection (body), dissemination (legs), (saliva) at 7, 14, 21 postinfection (DPI), respectively, compared rates between serotypes. analyzed cytochrome c oxidase I gene (cox-I) sequences DENV-susceptible nonsusceptible cohorts. Of 489 mosquitoes (DENV-2: 240; DENV-3: 249), found consistently higher but nonsignificant (16% vs. 10%), (47% (18/38) 35% (9/26)), (39% (7/18) 11% (1/9)) than DENV-3. However, exhibited shorter extrinsic incubation period (EIP) disseminated (7-DPI 14-DPI) (14-DPI 21-DPI) Two cox-I lineages were recovered phylogeny, one predominantly clustered with referenced Aaa minor lineage grouped Aaf. Infected those represented both lineages; transmitted viruses Aaa-associated only. conclude competent likely driven domestic predominant. The EIP attain could favour over

Characterization of dengue virus in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus spp. of mosquitoes: A study in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Dengue is a vector-borne disease caused by dengue virus. According to the recent report of CDC that one-third population of the world are at high risk with Dengue fever. The prevalence of the dengue hemorrhagic fever was found more in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Aedes mosquitoes was reported as the main cause of transmission of dengue virus. So the current study was planned ...

Comparison of Vector Competence of Aedes mediovittatus and Aedes aegypti for Dengue Virus: Implications for Dengue Control in the Caribbean

BACKGROUND Aedes mediovittatus mosquitoes are found throughout the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean and often share the same larval habitats with Ae. Aegypti, the primary vector for dengue virus (DENV). Implementation of vector control measures to control dengue that specifically target Ae. Aegypti may not control DENV transmission in Puerto Rico (PR). Even if Ae. Aegypti is eliminated or DENV...

Quantitative trait loci that control vector competence for dengue-2 virus in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting the ability of the mosquito Aedes aegypti to become infected with dengue-2 virus were mapped in an F(1) intercross. Dengue-susceptible A. aegypti aegypti were crossed with dengue refractory A. aegypti formosus. F(2) offspring were analyzed for midgut infection and escape barriers. In P(1) and F(1) parents and in 207 F(2) individuals, regions of 14 cDNA lo...

Vector competence of populations of Aedes aegypti from three distinct cities in Kenya for chikungunya virus

BACKGROUND In April, 2004, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) re-emerged in Kenya and eventually spread to the islands in the Indian Ocean basin, South-East Asia, and the Americas. The virus, which is often associated with high levels of viremia in humans, is mostly transmitted by the urban vector, Aedes aegypti. The expansion of CHIKV presents a public health challenge both locally and internationally....

Differential replication of dengue virus serotypes 2 and 3 in coinfections of C6/36 cells and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

INTRODUCTION Different dengue virus (DENV) serotypes have been associated with greater epidemic potential. In turn, the increased frequency in cases of severe forms of dengue has been associated with the cocirculation of several serotypes. Because Colombia is a country with an endemic presence of all four DENV serotypes, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo and in vitro replication...
